Snowbirds Left Out in the Cold Due to RV Park Closures Amid COVID

May 1, 2020

Snowbirds who heeded the federal government order to return to Canada are struggling to find their usual accommodations at provincial and private campgrounds due to COVID.

Every winter, thousands of Canadians head down to the US to avoid the colder weather and seek mobile accommodations in a warmer climate. Many head to Arizona while others travel to Florida. These snowbirds are very used to this way of life. Unfortunately COVID has changed a great many things for these full time RVers who are used to flitting from one country to another.

When travel restrictions were put in place in March, Canadian snowbirds began to head back across the Canadian border in an effort to heed the federal government’s call for Canadians to return home from the U.S. and isolate themselves. This in itself caused issues as snowbirds are nothing if not scheduled and altering travel times means spending more time in an area where they hadn’t planned to.

When social isolation restrictions were put into place, a new problem presented itself in the form of all provincial campgrounds closing, including many private RV parks. While some remain open, there’s certainly not enough to accommodate the early influx of campers.

Alexandra Anderson, executive director of Camping in Ontario, a trade group that represents private campgrounds, said her group has received word that “hundreds, possibly thousands” of stranded RVers who have no brick-and-mortar residences have been calling campgrounds all around the province, looking for vacancies.

The same problem is occurring all across Canada and is having a big impact on those travellers who don’t have a permanent home. While many are able to stay on family property, those that relied on the availability of campgrounds and RV parks are having trouble finding accommodation.

According to the BC Government website, “In response to continuing efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19; effective April 7th, 2020 a Recreation Order is now in effect that closes all Recreation Sites with camping facilities until May 31st or until the order is rescinded or replaced by another order.”

This means all provincial and private parks are closed in BC until further notice. Private RV parks such as the Farming Karma RV Park in Kelowna, BC, are still taking reservations for once the order is rescinded and campgrounds can begin opening their gates once more.
