Greece: Strike closes Acropolis, main museums

Oct 15, 2018

ATHENS, Greece — The ancient Acropolis in Athens and most of Greece's archaeological sites and publicly-run museums are closed to the public because of a 24-hour strike called by a union of Culture Ministry employees. Scores of tourists gathered Thursday outside the Acropolis, initially unaware of the strike. The union has accused the government of failing to exempt the transfer of ownership of national heritage sites to a powerful privatization fund created during the country's international bailouts. The Culture Ministry says the concerns are unfounded.

Can wireless challenge cable for home internet service?

Oct 15, 2018

NEW YORK — Cellular companies such as Verizon are looking to challenge traditional cable companies with residential internet service that promises to be ultra-fast, affordable and wireless. Using an emerging wireless technology known as 5G, Verizon's 5G Home service provides an alternative to cable for connecting laptops, phones, TVs and other devices over Wi-Fi. It launches in four U.S. cities on Monday. Verizon won't be matching cable companies on packages that also come with TV channels and home phone service. But fewer people have been subscribing to such bundles anyway, as they embrace streaming services such as Netflix for video...

Archaeologists discover 'massive' ancient building in Egypt

Oct 15, 2018

CAIRO — Egypt says archaeologists have discovered a "massive" ancient building in the town of Mit Rahina, 20 kilometers, or 12 miles, south of Cairo. The Antiquities Ministry says Tuesday archaeologists also uncovered an attached building that includes a large Roman bath and a chamber likely for religious rituals. Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says the building is likely part of the residential block of the area, which was the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. Memphis, founded around 3,100 B.C., was home to Menes, the king who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Egypt hopes such...

Ancient treasures on show in Germany reveal turbulent past

Oct 15, 2018

BERLIN — An arrowhead firmly lodged in the skull of an ancient fallen warrior, a voluptuous woman's form carved from ivory and the mask of a Roman river god are among more than 1,000 major archaeological discoveries being brought together for the first time. The exhibition opening Friday at Berlin's Gropius Bau museum reveals how war, art and migration have left their mark in Germany since the Stone Age. The show spans more than 300,000 years, starting with a sleek wooden spear used by one of the pre-human species that once roamed the continent long before homo sapiens arrived. Neanderthal...

State-backed hackers target Gmail of US senators, aides

Oct 15, 2018

State-backed hackers are still trying to break into the personal email accounts of U.S. senators and their aides — and a lawmaker focused on cybersecurity says the Senate's security office should stop refusing to help defend them. Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said in a Wednesday letter to Senate leaders that his office discovered that "at least one major technology company" has warned an unspecified number of senators and aides that their personal email accounts were "targeted by foreign government hackers." On Thursday, Google spokesman Aaron Stein confirmed that his company had notified the Senate targets. Neither Stein nor...
